Why Torah Obedience is Not Biblical

Once a Christian is saved, should they obey the old testament Torah out of obedience to Christ?  This question is proliferating across the internet and has confused many people in their walk with Christ.  At face value, it sounds very good.  If Jesus followed the Torah (old testament law of Moses) and I want to walk like Jesus, why wouldn’t I?  Additionally, there are several verses in the bible which state that not one dot or iota of the law would pass away until heaven and earth pass away (Matthew 5:18). However, when we simply read our bible, we figure out that the early churches (like Galatians) had this same mentality but were chastised by the Apostle Paul as it was false doctrine.  Today, the concept or Torah Obedience is known as “Hebrew Roots” or “Hebrew Roots Movement”.

What it all leads to is this:  when the bible says “the law” or “torah”, is it always referring to the Old Testament Law of Sin and Death?  The answer is NO.  What you’ll find is that the Old Testament Law which was physical in nature was fulfilled to a higher spiritual reality through Christ.  It is now called the Law of the Spirit of Life and is radically different than the old.

Isaiah 55: 8-9

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

What is the Torah?

The Torah is generally referred to as the instructions and commands given to Moses in the desert.  You can find the 613 rules given to Moses within the first five books of the Old Testament.  It includes rules such avoiding unclean meats (pork, shrimp, etc.), circumcision of males on the 8th day, head coverings for women, etc.  A new Christian might be reading through these rules and say to themselves, “Eating pork doesn’t seem like sin to me”.  But quickly after that thought, one might say “Well, his ways are higher than my ways.  If he commanded it, I should follow.”  What’s the truth in this matter?

Understanding the Law of the Spirit

The Lord really led me to do 3 core videos on this subject as the deception is incredibly great.  Once you come to a realization of how subtle the deception is, and how great the consequence, you’ll have a greater understanding of how cunning the devil is.

Video 1 – The Parable of the Wine & Wineskin

All the teaching that I give in the following three videos can be summed up in the parable that Jesus gave regarding the Wine and Wineskins.  It’s referenced in Luke 5:36-39, Mark 2:21-22 and other gospels.  I explain in 6 short minutes, why the Law of Sin and Death (physical instruction) was fulfilled or transformed into the Law of the Spirit (spiritual realities).  If this video intrigues you, you can then watch the 2nd and 3rd videos.  They are a bit longer at 20-35 minutes long.  However, one must really understand the deception occurring here.

Video 2 & 3 – Physical Requirements Transformed into Spiritual Realities

In Hebrews 10:16, it says, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds”.

If you think you need to obey the “letter code” of the Old Testament Torah law, you may be thinking this:  “If the law is written on our hearts, how come I don’t instinctively  know rules like unclean vs. clean meats?  If you are thinking only in “physical terms”, then no, you would not know of the rules concerning clean and unclean meats.  However, that’s only a physical teaching given to us by the Torah.  What is the fulfillment of this from a spiritual context?

Jesus says in John 6:55 – For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

The Torah was simply teaching Israel spiritual things in physical context.  What Jesus revealed in the Law of the Spirit is that he wants you to only eat “clean meat” from a spiritual perspective.  Call it, “soul food” if you’d like.  Our souls require clean spiritual meat which only Christ gives us.  So one definitely knows in their heart what is good food for the soul (Christ centered) and bad food for the soul.

The following videos describes the profound spiritual realities of the physical letter code of the Law (Torah):

Video 4 – Testing the Torah Obedience Doctrine

If you’ve made it this far, you are probably receiving this word with great joy and gladness.  I hope you see how Christ set us free from the bondage of the old law.  However, the Hebrew Roots movement will continue to instill doubt whether you are on the right track or not.  In this video, I show you how obedience to the Torah does not hold water when contrasted against other Christian doctrines.  You will see though, that adherence to the Law of the Spirit does hold water against other Christian doctrines.  May you be blessed in all of this!
